About Us

Kia ora, I'm Bonnie the Programme Lead for Te Waka Unua. When I'm not at programme, I'm out and about all over Christchurch and North Canterbury teaching kapa haka and poi in different schools! Te Ao Māori is my passion, and my favourite way to engage in it is through performing arts. On programme, I am the Chief Executive Fort Builder and I pride myself in my ability to make up a fun game out of anything!

At Te Waka Unua, we also have our awesome driver and supervisor, Madie, and our wonderful 2IC Lily. Madie is a crafty queen and our resident tech whiz, and she's also our reigning UNO Champ. Lily is our head chef and whips up delicious snacks for our tamariki each day, and she's also the princess of prizes, always bringing exciting goodies to share with our best-behaved participants.

For Te Waka Unua participants the name of the game is always "FUN!" Some of our favourite things to do are get messy with science, art and water play in the summer, play exciting games like indoor spotlight and build awesome forts both inside and outside - everywhere we go.

We are so lucky at Te Waka Unua to have such an awesome programme space, a large hall full of basketball hoops, a lovely kitchen space for cooking, three different sized basketball courts, two playgrounds, a football field, and a scooter track. We take advantage of the small playground and swing set just outside the school gates at Woolston Park, enjoy the views of the beautiful hills from the spiderweb and in summer we can even set up a water slide on the built-in turf hills all over the school. Our site is the place to be for all 5-13yr old fun-lovers!

Why choose Youthtown

If you’re looking for a fun, engaging place to learn things, make friends and build confidence, look no further! Our Holiday Programme staff are skilled at helping new participants settle in and make connections.

Our Holiday Programme is intentionally designed to create space for positive outcomes. There’s a lot going on under the surface, thanks to our Youthtown Curriculum, to ensure this happens!

From the first time you enter a Youthtown programme, you’ll be warmly greeted by our team and treated as part of our Youthtown whānau.
